Soul to Soul: A Sacred Dance Journey

In 1989, Kathryn Mihelick, Andrea Shearer, and Lisa Fogel found themselves to be of like mind in viewing dance as having powerful potential as an agent for change, self-discovery and personal and international peace. Written by Kathryn E. Mihelick and Andrea Tecza Shearer, Soul To Soul is part autobiography, part instructional guide, and tells the story of the Leaven Dance Company and their journey of sacred dance.

My work for this project focused on branding the book and it’s accompanying online and print components.

This design solution includes:

  • book layout/cover design

  • print design

  • web design and development

  • photo-manipulation and restoration

  • design research (survey, interviews)

  • copywriting/copy editing

The Leaven Dance Company brought a spiritual life and color into the worlds of religion and dance for many years.

The images below are page dividers for the book “Soul to Soul: A Sacred Dance Journey.” Each image is a historical photo from the Leaven Dance Company archives spanning the last 30 years. These images were used in the book to notate chapters and incorporate the visual power of the book’s content.

These colors and textures used throughout the book were completed as digital paintings by hand. This project also features figural illustrations throughout, particularly for movement and choreography diagrams.

The Leaven Dance Company Website

The redesigned and reorganized site features information about the new book, as well as a biography of the authors and an archive of the former dance company’s photographs, choreography, and performance records from over the years.

The site was constructed in Squarespace using custom designed and illustrated assets.
