line of sight

The year 2019 marked the thirtieth anniversary of my alma mater, the Mrs. H. D. Dear, Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State University. I was a very active student on the campus, and served as a full time faculty member for three years there until moving to Ohio in 2012. So, it was a huge honor to be selected as the thirtieth anniversary alumni exhibitor during the anniversary celebration.

This exhibition features work in my typical vein of collage with ephemera and found objects. I took this collection as an opportunity to explore reflective materials that were new to me, such as metal leafing, crystals, glitters, and mica, as well as metallic paints and inks. The pieces are mostly painted on canvas, marking a slight departure from my typical wood panels. Instead, I have framed each piece with stained pine, some of which was reclaimed.

“Line of Sight” serves as both a means of reflection and as a wish for the future. Thematically, the show is about peeking behind the dark corners of our lives, and revealing the light and beauty within. These new works feature several small hand painted birds, all of whom are representative of a system of supportive individuals have relied upon during my darkest times in recent years.

A Moment Apart

“Line of Sight” is named for and largely inspired by the album “A Moment Apart” by ODESZA. The cinematic scale of the album, paired with the content found in the lyrics and in accompanying visuals, really fueled me with a desire to explore new ideas in painting.

I encourage you to listen to the song “Line of Sight” while taking a look at the work for the full experience from my perspective.
